Course content
1. Defining the issue of regional development Relationship of regional development to other professional disciplines (mainly geography, economics, sociology). 2. Relationship of Regional Development Urban development and regional policy, the concept of regional competitiveness. 3. Academic field of regional development Books, journals, institutions and personalities. 4. Practice in regional development Institutions and their jurisdictional scope, sources of information for graduates. 5. Principles of Regional Development Regional development and market and regulatory mechanisms, approaches to regional development, strategy of territorial development. 6. Basic theory and regional conceptualization Regionalization, input overview of theoretical approaches to the development of regions. 7. Methods of regional analysis Generalization, comparison, synthesis, statistical tools of regional analysis (selected indices, coefficients, and various synthetic indicators). 8. Processing and interpretation of spatial data Tabular and graphical reports, maps and other outputs processed using geographic information systems. 9. Sources of regional data Indicators of regional development. 10. Tools of regional development I Input schematic overview (spatial planning, strategic planning, territorial marketing). 11. Tools of regional development II Input schematic overview (promotion of innovation and business environment, attraction of investments in the territory, innovative approaches to the management of territorial development). 12. Illustrative examples of successful and unsuccessful regions in the most advanced countries of the world Discussion of different development trajectories, the process of changing territory. 13. Development of Regions of the Czech Republic Form of spatial differentiation of territorries, fundamental debate on the possibility of developing of Czech regions.

Learning outcomes
The course is designed as a primary input into the issue of regional development disciplines. The course is designed as an starting and surveillance and the purpose is to provide a schematic overview of topics that will be addressed in detail in following courses on bachelor's and master's program.
At the end of the course students will be able to cope with basic understanding of the topic of regional development and will understand fundamental knowledge of the discipline.

Assessment methods and criteria
Exam: written test form with 20 questions. Markings: excellent - correctly answer min. 16 questions very well - correctly answer 14 to 15 questions well - correctly answer 12 to 13 questions Attendance at a lecture optional.
