Course content
1. Characterization of microbiology; its history; specification of micro-organisms; cell strategy. 2. Characterization of bacteria, actinomycetes, micromycetes, viruses; samples and their importance in water. 3. Abiotic and biotic aspects. 4. Growth and reproduction of bacteria, cultivations. 5. Metabolism - enzymes, energy, catabolic and anabolic processes, cell transport. 6. Metabolism - element circulation, biogeochemical cycles, physiological groups of bacteria. 7. Genetics of micro-organisms. 8. Coordination of metabolic functions in cell, adaptation and selection. 9. Pollution and its impact on micro-organisms. 10. Micro-organisms and importance of organisms in water quality, the fecal and no-fecal organisms. 11. Micro-organisms in waste water. 12. Micro-organisms in sewage sludge. 13. The methods and procedures for cultivations of micro-organisms. 14. Quality assurance and quality control, ISO norms and Czech standards.

Learning outcomes
Topics of the course are microbiology and hydrobiology applications in technologies. There are described more details and information about directives, norms, hygienic aspects, water treatment technology and waste water treatment technology. The introduction offers basic hydrobiology and ecology terms, the history of applied hydrobiology, basic information about taxonomy and systematic summary of microorganisms. The types and biotopes of surface and underground water are specified, as well as abiotic physical and chemical conditions of biotopes, biocenosis of standing water, biological productions and limnological methods of sampling and analyses. The problems of water treatment technology are described very widely. Biology of waste water, problems of self-purification, index of saprobity, the ways of waste water treatment technology are solved in a special part of the lectures. Toxicity, trophic levels and their roles in water biocenosis are solved, too. The importance of the placement of microorganisms in processes and technologies.
