Course content
1. Landscape ecology and environmental sciences. Basic landscape properties - structure, function and change. Natural and anthropogenic factors contributing to the landscape formation. 2. Landscape classification (regionalization and typology). Top-down and bottom-up hierarchical typology (from ecotope to group of landscape types). Valuation of natural and cultural characteristics of the landscape. 3. Landscape structure as a mosaic of landscape components (patches, corridors, matrix) and their pattern. Function of landscape mosaic, its fragmentation and structure changes. 4. Ecosystem approach to the landscape. Environmental and energetic systems. Scaling and its significance during studies of landscape structure and function. 5. Ecological stability, meta-stability, lability. Basic types of ecological stability -permanence, cyclicality, resistance, resilience. 6. Changes in energy and substance flows in the landscape. Valuation of ecosystem functions in the landscape on the basis of energy flux. 7. Control and ecosystem processes management. 8. Landscape formation processes (geomorphologic processes, landscape colonization by organisms, disturbances). Natural and anthropogenic changes of the landscape and their monitoring. 9. Deterioration of the nature by anthropogenic activities. Natural and cultural landscape from the point of view of historical development. 10. Landscape ecology as a basic science for applied disciplines. Land cover mapping, Natura 2000, EECONET. Valuation of landscape character. 11. Landscape planning. Scenario use for the prediction of subsequent cultural landscape development. 12. Ecosystem functions and providing of ecosystem services. 13. Environmental and economic connections of landscape ecology. Landscape valuation. 14. Global management of the Earth life environment.
