Learning outcomes
The course is a part of the theoretical basis for nursing care in the work of midwives. It is an introduction to the care of the basic need of a person - nutrition. It provides complex information about nutrition and its importance for the overall health of a human. It introduces the risks of malnutrition, excessive nutrition and the differences in feeding and nutrition intake in the old age. It includes clinical conditions in nutritional disorders and enteral and parenteral kinds of feeding in institutions and at homes. The course provides complex information about human nutrition and it further focuses on the nutrition of pregnant and breastfeeding women and infants, and women with a specific disease. It also explains and clarifies the reasons and consequences of nutritional disorders in health and disease.
Subject knowledge A student knows the basic needs of daily doses of nutrients, vitamins and minerals in health and disease and their appropriate food sources. A student knows the energy needs of an organism, nutritional needs of an individual with regard to age, gender and health conditions. A student is able to evaluate alternative nutrition methods objectively in the terms of nutritional needs. Professional skills A student will acquire skills for defining basic nutritional needs of patients with the respect to developmental traits of women. A student is able to use the screening tool MUST practically in order to evaluate the malnutrition risk of a patient. He knows and promotes breastfeeding as the best nutrition of a newborn. A student is able to teach a woman about the nutritional needs of infants, toddlers, and also during pregnancy.
