Course content

Learning activities and teaching methods
Learning outcomes
The course provides the orientation to medical - economic issues. It informs students about the business in health and the economic aspects of this business. It introduces the issue of economics and health insurance systems. It introduces students to the provision of health services, in our country and in the other countries of the world, in relation to the financing of these services. The course also deals with the efficiency of provided health care services and the aspects of buying a service in comparison with securing it oneself.
Subject knowledge A student knows the health care systems, its historical development and basic characteristics. A student is, within the field of financing health care, familiar with the basic reimbursement mechanisms, knows the current ordinance regulating the conditions of financing health insurance and the areas of basic funding in accordance with the Public Health Insurance Act. A student understands the mutual relation of health care financing and the health and social insurance, knows the historical development of both types of the insurance and the terms for collecting premiums as well as the kinds of social insurance benefits. A student knows, within the issue of health institution economy, the different groups of yields and expenses and their volume in the total yields and expenses of medical institutions. A student knows the mechanisms of benefit calculation of purchased health services. A student is familiar with the various groups of health workers, their structure and the structure and amount of personal expenses. A student has some basic understanding of the tax system in the Czech Republic, essential reporting, tax environment, and accounting tools. Professional skills A student is able to distinguish individual health systems according to their basic characteristics. A student is able to calculate the amount of mandatory contributions to health and social insurance and, depending on the calculation, calculate the total cost of labour and the net pay of an employee. A student is able to quantify the value added tax and the total cost of the tangible and intangible resources, can distinguish between long-term tangible and intangible assets, is able to classify the usual consumer durables to individual depreciation rates and calculate the amount of depreciation on the basis of typical characteristics. A student can compare the offered price to the costs incurred in connection with the provision of services by own means and forces, when assessing the benefits of buying health services.
