Course content
1. Semester schedule, the conditions for obtaining credit and exams. Introduction into the subject. Modelling of geographic objects. 2. Basic of mathematical cartography and simple cartographic projections. Coordinate systems using in Czech Republic. Maps and their classification. 3. Basic work in GIS - aspects of geodata, vector and raster models. 4. Data processing methods, map production, spatial composition map. 5. Thematic cartography and its methods. Generalisation and statistics. 6. Sources of spatial and attribute data. The data creation. 7. Data sources in the CZE 8. Transformation in between coordinate systems, geometrical transformations 9. GPS, field mapping 10. GIS analysis 1 11. GIS analysis 2 12. Digital terrain models 13. Data visualization 14. Tests

Learning activities and teaching methods
Learning outcomes
The course provides basic information on Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and cartography. It familiarizes students with data structure and compares GIS with related software tools. It deals with cartographic elements, data base principles and advantages of mentioned facility for saving, processing and representation of geographically located data. Seminars are focused on mastering of available software tools and basic GIS instruments and methods. Students who pass this course are able to use given data in GIS and acquire their own data and utilize GIS for their documentation and presentation.
Basic theoretical knowledge about GIS and cartography, practical knowledge including the ArcGIS software (processing existing data-sets, creation of own data a basic GIS analysis, creation of map compositions).

Assessment methods and criteria
Passing conditions: 1. Attendance to practical lessons 75% 2. 3 GIS projects. 3. Theoretical and practical test.
