Learning outcomes
The two-semester course acquaints students (in close connection with the contents of art history lectures) with development of important architectural styles. The course as well overlaps towards phenomena important both for architects and for designers (light, space, energy, genius loci, ergonomics of the space and the product). The seminar is divided in the following four units: Historism in architecture of the late-19 century, eclecticism, reviving tendencies of secession architecture. Architecture in the first half of 20th century, modernism, expressionism, cubism, functionalism, and Soviet (Russian) constructivism in architecture. Architecture in the second half of 20th century, graphic modifications of functionalism, modern classicism, brutalism, organic architecture, and new technologies and constructions. Postmodern architecture, architecture after modernism, historical quotations, emphasis on the graphic aspect of architecture. The seminars do not cover only individual architectural styles, but also urban conceptions in the shapes, which they were formed in by influence of period socio-cultural frames, depending on the given historical epoch and the particular geographical location. On the applied level, the seminars produce discussions about mutual communication and synergy between authors participating in construction of a particular architectural unit (from the urban planner, through the architect, up to the designer).
